No matter whether admit or ignore, the land and its history exist.

- Rudolf Steiner

In 1976, ‘Jamsil Sports Complex construction plan’ was established, and became a historic branch point. Jamsil was an alluvial island created by the accumulation of sand in the Han River downstream over a long period of time. Since 1976, Tancheon and waterfront of Han River were transformed into the landfill with a flat artificial line and roads were made on the high concrete banks.  In 1988, Seoul Olympic, a historic event throughout 5,000 years of Korean history, was held in Jamsil. The year 1988 was an important branch point of Seoul for becoming an international city, which was another spatial identity of Jamsil in history.

Through these two historic branch points, the Jamsil Sports Complex area became a symbol of the dynamic development of the capital Seoul. This area is worth as a monument which can provide a blueprint of Seoul as an international city and another historic branch points in the future.
By Urban Regeneration, Jamsil Sports Complex will be a space of ‘the future remembering the past’, i.e., ‘The rememberable future’. The ‘76 88 --’ plan for this Urban Regeneration of Jamsil Sports Complex area will generate the second ‘Miracle on the Han River’ utilizing the unlimited potential as ‘the international exchange district’, historic monument, waterfront, and recreation area.

Tunnel Walk

 Underground pedestrian-network

City Seoul requires a huge urban fabric possessing global programs in Gangnam connectingSamsung Subway Station and Jamsil Sports Complex across Tancheon. In orderto effectively expand MICE Infrastructure around Tancheon, the ‘Tunnel Walk’, an undergroundpedestrian-network in conjunction with the multimodal transportation infrastructureis proposed.

Jamsil Sports Complex

 Remembered by Collective memory

Jamsil Sports Complex will focus on creating a space for maximizing the historic valueand sense of place and stimulating the ‘collective memory’. The existing features and facilities of Olympic Main Stadium will be preserved and improved as much as possible to beremembered as a monument representing the 88 Seoul Olympics.

The phase plan for the existing facilities will be applied so that the current functions are not disconnected and relocated to the suitable spaces during the construction period. Each facility will be so configured that the existing features as well as various cultural andentertainment programs are carried in combination. Organical connection to the Tunnel Walk can support the convention and exhibition programs utilizing the MICE Infrastructurecoming across the Tancheon. In addition, this flow directly leads to the Han River so that thediverse international sports and leisure events can take place in Jamsil Sports Complexand Hangang Park.

In the vacant above ground land space, an eco-friendly environment will be created in Jamsil Sports Complex area by actively utilizing the nature of Han River and Tancheon. The ecological wetland and the sands will be restored by removing the artificial bank and the natural landscape will be extended from the waterfront. The height of the terrain, however, will be designed considering the flood stage in case of flooding.
