Alley for the Craft-Citizens

the Steel Alley added to the Citizen's Alley

2016, 8th semester in Hongik Univ.

Personal project

Along with construction of Seunsangga in the 70s, Sanrim-dong greeted the revival of manufacturing industry, but now it is on its way to decline. I suggest approaching Sanrim-dong from the viewpoint of urban regeneration rather than from a redevelopment perspective.

SITE ANALYSIS

Sanrim-dong faces Seunsangga, Euljiro Underground Walkway, and Cheonggyecheon Stream. So, the site is accessible from the east, west, north and south. It means, Sanrim-dong has favorable conditions for the influx of citizens.

OLD ROAD

At present, the road in Sanrim-dong is along the waterway which was formed in the past but is gone. The steel industry was made in line with this narrow road, so small articles have usually been produced. In addition, since the lots are small, each process is subdivided. Like this, the industry here has been adapted from the past in the alleys.

INDUSTRY SYSTEM

Currently, there are two types of industrial systems within the industrial complex.

First, a large company becomes the first supplier and the manufacturer in Sanrim-dong becomes the second subcon-tractor, and the subcontracted work is produced by collaborating with the link company. But this type of arrangement is being reduced because of globalization.

Second, when an individual wants to make an item that is not a ready-made product, he or she asks for it in Sanrim-dong. Since each step is separated, it is necessary for the individual to move according to the process. This is advantageous in terms of producing only a small amount. Citizens will be able to directly learn the process and make the steel products they want in the various processes in Sanrim-dong.

NEW ALLEY FOR CITIZENS

Before

After

I suggest creating a new alley to attract ordinary citizens and maintain the current industry by buying buildings that are not on the road or useful for the industry. The fact that the factories face both sides of the road means it is expected that the original road to the existing industrial system will be maintained, and their new industrial system with citizens will be created.

URBAN CONNECTORS

SITE PLAN
