Dichotomy of History

2016, Fountain Plaza in front of the Bank of Korea Renewal Idea Competition

Personal project

The situation where history is mixed in Seoul has definitely exposed. Ironically, we've easily forgotten it. Thus, I suggest that the site, Fountain Plaza in front of the Bank of Korea is thought as one of places of no historical awareness and it is main factor to design a new plaza.

Palimpsest of Gangbuk

Gangbuk, the district north of the Han River is the place to remember various historical event. Even though the urban fabric which had come from the Joseon Dynasty has destroyed a lot since the Korean War, we're still living a on the palimpsest. The site also has many layers of history.

I suggest dividing the history into two parts. Dichotomizing is the way to offer to easily recognize something difficult to understand. I expect that citizens could clearly understand the history of Seoul which is complicated and diverse by abstracting and simplifing it.

Underground square, past

The traces of the past is pictures in frames by removing  nothing but the past.

Open plaza, present

The present is formed by accumulation of the past. Thus, all of the city view is exposed.

Fountain, connection between present and past

In the past, fountain meant a monument showing record and aspiration of the age.

At present, it means the place where citizens enjoy in person. In this respect, this fountain represents both of them.
