Floating Promenade

2014, International Competition for Rehabilitating Mapo Oil Depot into a Cultural Depot Park

Internship at E-SCape Architects with prof. Chang Yongsoon

This project contains two paradoxical aims. To preserve the nature of mysterious ruins as a “forgotten land”, which was once used as an oil tank depot since the oil shock and to make a daily space where citizens could freely approach and wander around. Current site and tank depot itself retains abundant historical and aesthetic value. Ample nature, unharmed by human. Sense of rusted iron which embraces the track of the past 30 years. Light invading the empty tank and hollow but profound resonance. These are the legacy and the ruins that should be preserved intact. Rusted iron tank found in the bush gives a mysterious feeling as if discovering a legacy of an ancient civilization. How would it be possible to provide the citizens with an open daily space, while retaining the value of mysterious ruins?

To achieve these two aims, we would like to suggest the device which is in contrast with the existing character. It is the programmatic floating promenade detached from the ground. This promenade overcomes the severance of the ground by connecting the site scarcely touching the ground. Current site has two circuits, pathway to approach the tank (lower level) and Maebong mountain trails (upper level). These two circuits stands independently. We suggest the floating promenade to connect these two circuits. People strolling along the trails of Maebong mountain could come down to the lower level, and vice versa. While connecting two different routes surrounding the newly created cultural depot, the floating promenade creates one continuous circuit. In response to the level of the ground, floating promenade rises as it flows from the west to the east . Each levels are connected by ramps and stairs and the rooftop contains observation deck, while connecting wo routes of different levels.

Five tanks are precious legacies that contain the past time. We suggest a plan that could preserve the sense of time this site contains, at he most. Existing rusted steel wall is preserved as exterior material, and number 2, 3, 4 tanks, used for different purpose, are structurally einforced by casting concrete on the inside. In plan, facilities are placed unharming the property of a circle. We plan it to be used reviving he ambience of space the original oil reserve tank has had.

Basic facades are transparent glass, U-glass and polycarbonate composing the vertical pattern andexposed concrete wall with horizontal pattern. Cor-ten steel plate is inserted in the exposed concrete,so as time flows, vertical patterns are created by rust. Through this equence, facade expresses the change of the time. By planting ivy and plants in horizontal groove, we aim to create an elevation based on time, which will differ its appearance by rust and plants as time flows. Core is composed of specular surface, thus shown as if it disappears by reflected trees and sky. It gives an impression as if Floating Promenade is hovering in the air.
